Julianna Barwick – Rising to the dawn, reaching to the sky

Credit Shawn Brackbill

Ambient music is a broad and often misleading category of music, but throughout all ambient music there is a sense of spacious and expansive musical landscapes.   Julianna Barwick’s music is soaring, captivating and sparse, evocative of snowy, windblown places.

Iceland Rocks

Maybe it is something to do with the landscape, but with a population only a little bigger than Spokane (about 320, 000), Iceland produces more than its fair share of talented musicians.   The well-known names include Björk, Jónsi and his band Sigur Rós, as well as youngsters Of Monsters and Men.

When Two Jazz Greats Collide.

Pat Metheny plays John Zorn.     And why not?     While Zorn is best known for his sometimes difficult, avant-garde jazz, Metheny is no stranger to blistering experimentation.   On Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20, Metheny returns to a style he worked in 1994 with Ornette Coleman (‘Song X’), solo in 1994 ('Zero Tolerance for Silence') and then with Derek Bailey in 1996 ('Sign of 4').

During the holiday season of 2011/12 it was almost impossible to avoid the three chord singalong, Lonely Boy, the first track on The Black Keys’ seventh album, El Camino.  For bandmates, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney it marked distinct commercial success, as the song reached 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album being certified a platinum record.

Laura, Laura and Laura

Three gorgeous women, three gorgeous voices.    And they’re all named Laura!

Laura Mvula is a young, British soul-singer with a big, lush, smoky voice.   There's a touch of baroque in her songs, a touch of torch singer.  She travels from big diva ballads to mysterious, intimate introspections.

It is hard to avoid asking whether she is the "new Adele", but she brings more to my mind Nina Simone.  Her debut CD, Sing to the Moon, is out now on RCA Victor.    The single, Green Garden, is a fair introduction:
